COUNTY CLARE IS CROWNED ALL-IRELAND CHAMPION IN THE NATIONAL REHAB/POWERS WHISKEY PUB QUIZ
24-November-2009

The final, which took place in the Bridge House Hotel in Tullamore, followed a series of county finals which took place around the country earlier this month and featured the winning teams from 25 counties in a general knowledge showdown. Legendary GAA commentator, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, was special guest quizmaster for the evening.
It was a closely fought battle for The Creamery's team, made up by John Hayes, Dermot Downes, Teddy Twohig and Kieran Ryan, who edged out Kerry representatives The Grand Hotel by just one point. The winning team members were presented with vouchers worth €2,000 and four bottles of Powers 12 Year Old Special Reserve.
The second prize of €1,000 in vouchers and four bottles of Powers gold label whiskey went to a team from The Grand Hotel in Tralee, Co. Kerry. A team from the Glencar Inn in Donegal came third and won €400 in vouchers and four bottles of wine.
The fundraiser for Rehab saw pub quiz nights take place in just over 200 participating VFI pubs throughout the country and a total of €60,000 has been raised towards the further development of Rehab services nationwide.
Pauline Crowley, Head of Fundraising, Rehab, said, "The National Rehab Powers Whiskey Pub Quiz once again proved to be a fantastic way for people to enjoy a fun evening out while raising valuable funds for Rehab services in communities across Ireland.
"Over 200 VFI pubs took part and €60,000 was raised in this, the third year of the quiz. This money will benefit Rehab services locally, so we would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who got involved in the quiz - we hope you had fun along the way."
Val Hanley, VFI President, commented: "The VFI was delighted to be involved in the National Rehab/Powers Whiskey Pub Quiz once again this year and our members have responded really well to the initiative as we had expected.
"The pub is the main social hub for many communities in Ireland and events like these are a great way to bring people together in a social environment and in support of such a good cause."
Suzanne Lawlor, Senior Brand Manager, Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard, added, "Powers Whiskey is proud to support such a great initiative. Congratulations to the national, county and individual pub winners, and our thanks to everyone who took part or helped in any way."
The quiz tested the teams' knowledge of a wide range of subjects including history, music, sport, art and literature, geography, film and TV, and current affairs. The final also included questions on the 1980s and a picture round.
