VFI URGE MEMBERS TO REMAIN VIGILANT IN LIGHT OF RECENT EVENTS

The Vintners' Federation of Ireland (VFI), which represents some 5,000 publicans throughout the country outside of Dublin, has expressed concern at recent attacks on publicans and is urging all its members, and especially those located in rural areas, to remain vigilant.

While the VFI emphasises that the risk of armed robbery is remote for the majority of pubs, it is important for any business which is handling cash to ensure that best practice security procedures are followed at all times in order to protect its premises and staff.

Val Hanley, President of the VFI, said: "Recent tragic events in Offaly have shocked and horrified the pub trade, and indeed the entire country, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Matt Farrell.

"There has also been a number other less publicised serious incidents involving publicans around the country..

"While incidents like these are rare, it does highlight the need for publicans to remain on their guard. We are urging all our members to ensure they take the necessary measures to safeguard themselves, their premises and their staff.

The following are just a few security guidelines recommended by the VFI:

• Ensure that a minimal amount of cash is held on the premises at any one time and make regular bank deposits
• Ongoing processes for identifying and monitoring threats should be in place
• Ensure you have opening and closing routines
  • Where practicable, more than one staff member should be involved in opening up - and particularly closing - premises
  • Note any person loitering outside the premises, and if your suspicions are aroused, inform the Gardaí
  • Where possible, ensure that time locks are activated, and that the safe is secured
  • Be alert to unusual activities inside and outside the premises
• Secure locks on all doors and windows
• Where possible, intruder alarms and security lighting should be installed
