Irresponsible Sale and Promotion of Alcohol Must be Tackled
03-July-2012
The VFI was not surprised to read that four Supermarket stores across Leinster were advertising ‘Children’s Allowance Day Deals’ which included specific discounted promotional offers on alcohol.
We have long seen evidence of this first hand, not only inside the supermarkets, but, also in print media, where price led alcohol promotions by supermarkets targeted the timings of payment of the Children’s Allowance and other such payments.
It is as opportunistic as is the practice of using alcohol pricing as a footfall driver.
The only difference with the four Centra Supermarkets involved in today’s issue is that they actually told it as it is – we want your children’s allowance and here is the incentive – cheap alcohol.
Everyone involved in the drinks trade owes a duty to the public to sell and supply alcohol in a responsible and safe manner and this practice, which has been going on for quite some time, must not be tolerated.
