VFI Calls on Government to Examine Below Cost Selling of Alcohol in Supermarkets

The Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (“VFI”) today called on the Government to look at the pricing strategies/policies of supermarkets in Ireland.
Following the publication of the latest Eurostat figures, CEO of the VFI, Padraig Cribben warned that, “There is a strong argument to be made that these latest Eurostat figures support what we and organisations like us have been saying for some time, that supermarkets are increasing the price of staple food products like bread, milk and meat to allow them sell alcohol below cost as a loss leading marketing strategy.

The Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (“VFI”) Stars of our Bars National Final, in association with Smithwick’s, is only a few days away and the tension is mounting.
Twelve acts will compete on Saturday, 3 July 2010 in the Hazel Hotel, Monasterevin, Co. Kildare where each finalist stands the chance to win €7,500 and of course the title of being crowned Stars of our Bars Winner 2010!
VFI Accuses Government of Deliberately Destroying the Pub Industry

The Government is deliberately destroying the pub industry with over regulation through legislation such as the Road Traffic Bill 2009 (the “Bill”) which is currently at the Report Stage in Dáil Éireann according to the President of the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (“VFI”), Gerry Mellett.

The Elm Tree in Glounthaune, Co Cork, was named Ireland’s number one pub at the national Licensing World Bar Awards in Dublin last night.
Situated just 10 minutes from Cork city, The Elm Tree was named Licensing World Bar of the Year 2010 after also claiming the Campari Style Bar Award earlier on the night.
