About Us

We are what people like to think a "family pub" should be. A place where the mature drinker likes to frequent - by mature we do not mean in years, but in attitude to alcohol. A place to feel safe while socialising, a place to enjoy the company of like-minded people. The Wander in is what we like to be thought of as "an oasis of sanity in an ever changing world!". That is how a customer described the pub and it is still as true today as it was then, many years ago. In a survey, Wander Inn was voted the Top Local in Waterford and it is easy to see why! It is a combination of the people who serve there and the customers that make it the place it is - friendly, a place to feel comfortable, enjoy the craic, tell stories and listen to the experiences of others and still pay a moderate, reasonable price for whatever you drink. Wander Inn is situated in the "Old Town" of Waterford City, which makes it very accessible and both local and visitor can walk to the pub. The less active can avail of the handy public bus service or the taxi cars that abound and the Wander Inn has ample private car parking available to customers. Designated drivers who would like a cup of tea or coffee can have it in the Wander Inn. A full range of soft drinks, beers, stouts and spirits are available but the customers always have a healthy respect for the amount consumed. What others have written about the Wander Inn: "The Wander Inn, Johnstown - now this is a local with a difference for it is three bars in one. There is the bar or Snug as the lads call it, where the regulars congregate to chat over the events of the day, swop yarns and tell stories. Mind you, we did not say lies, but some of what we heard was hard to swallow!! Nevertheless, it was great fun." "The second feature of the Wander is the lounge. Spacious and airy, it is designed with a feature counter that is the focal point. The counter lends itself to conversation for all those seated there, as everyone can see each other. The ideal place for the stranger to become one of the gang. It is easy to feel welcome as the staff and customers are a homely lot, full of the hospitality that Waterford is renowned for." "The third bar is a function room which can accommodate 170 people and as it is self contained it is the perfect venue for a private party.

Local Attractions

Waterford is the capital of the sunny Southeast, which makes it the hub of most of the activity. Just to walk along the Quays is a joy in itself. The river Suir, pronounced sure, is one of the most impressive of all Ireland's rivers. The Suir is now lined with a marina on the city side. The pleasure craft berthed on the marina are a delight to look at, they range from small punts to large yachts. Have a look for yourself; you will be delighed with the spectacle. Most of the Quay forms one side othe triangle that bounds the main shopping area which makes Waterford a magnet for both locals and visitors. Department Stores such as Shaws (almost nationwide as their slogan says) and Kelly's, with its upmarket range of goods, are a must for all shoppers and the vast assortment of speciality shops are a browsers dream! Added to all this is the multitude of small coffee shops and bars giving a comfortable resting place for the weary shopper. The Triangle is a wonderful area to shop and be seen in our City. The other sides run from the Clock Tower to the corner of John's Street, or as we locals call it, the Car Stand, for it was here that the local jarvy's parked their horse and buggy while waiting for a fare. The third side is from the Car Stand straight down Parnell Street to Reginald's Tower and back to the Clock Tower. Wander Inn makes the ideal starting point for the locals and visitors because adjacent to the Wander is one of the City's biggest car parks. For those who enjoy heritage, Waterford is steeped in history, being the oldest City in Ireland - having a royal charter from King John before any other Irish City gives it the honour. The Granary now houses both the City Tourist Offices and our Heritage Centre. Our two Cathedrals, the Catholic one being sited in Barron Strand Street and the Church of Ireland Cathedral, Christ Church, with its tall spire dominating the skyline, are a must see for visitors. Added to these is the oldest operating church in Ireland, St Patrick's, which has been in continuous use since it was built. It is said that Cromwell stabled his horses there while in occcupation of Urbes Intacata (Waterford). There is an escorted Walking Tour available, information is contained in the Waterford Pub Guide to be found in any of the pubs in the City. The Pub Guide is a mine of information which can be accessed through the internet on www.waterfordpubguide.com. Let us publicans help make your visit to Waterford memorable for all the right reasons! Proprietor, John Aylward looks forward to meeting you and showing you a real Irish welcome. The Wander has music and dancing together with a sing-song every Sunday night. This has been going on for the last 50 years so we must be doing something right! Nothing too modern, but the customers have been known to have a jive from time to time. Respect is the name of the game - respect for yourself and other customers is what is required. You will be safe in the Wander Inn. Food Sorry, we don't do food. But we can arrange a caterer to meet with your needs if you're having a special event - be it a party, meeting, seminar or a sad occasion such as a funeral, we can meet all your requirements. John and his team are at your service.
